Aikido in Amsterdam, traditional Japanese martial arts training

The JYM Movement in Amsterdam offers authentic Japanese martial arts training focused on effectiveness, awareness, and personal development. Aikido is a traditional Budo that emphasizes harmony, control, and efficient movement rather than brute force. Whether you are new to martial arts or an experienced practitioner, our dojo provides a supportive environment where technique, mindset, and physical understanding develop together.

Training Aikido helps improve coordination, balance, flexibility, and mental clarity, while also offering practical insights into self-defense and conflict management. Trainings are open to adults of all experience levels and are guided by experienced instructors who value safety, respect, and continuous learning.

Budo and it’s all about technique

During the training we practice all kinds of techniques from joint locks to throwing techniques. Within the techniques we emphasize on posture, balance, breathing, distance, and timing.

A good Aikido technique requires no effort and can be highly effective. “Budo” means “martial art,” and we always strive for the most effective interpretation of a technique.
During the lessons we try to develop an open mind and spirit, with a critical view on what we practice.

Due to the nature of its techniques, Aikido does not have competitions.
On a higher level one can start to use some pressure testing. As a starter we don’t recommend trying pressure testing since lot off techniques consist of breaking joints and we want to avoid injuries.

There is not one uniform way of performing techniques. Everybody is different with an own set of abilities. During the lessons you will mostly get confronted with oneself. Through the practice of all the techniques, one learns to understand its own body and moving.

Aikido is a martial art that originates from the classical samurai martial arts of feudal Japan, specifically the Daito school of Aiki Jiu-Jitsu. In our lessons we also practice with sword (Katana) and Jo (wooden stick).

Aikido can be a very interesting supplement for people who already are doing other forms of martial arts like kickboxing, judo or jujitsu. In our Aikido we concentrate on the “grammar of Budo” which are universal and apply to all the martials arts disciplines. For example: balance breaking, hip and footwork, directions and positionings towards the opponent, timing, concentration, relaxing and breathing.
